#1- Made in Heaven

made in heaven

Made in Heaven kept me hooked and on a binge till I completed the season.

What starts off as a simple story about a team of wedding planners touches on bold and sensitive topics as it peels off layer after layer in every episode.

Right from Tara who is ambitious enough to make her way from rags to riches through marriage, to Karan who is left with no choice but to hide his homosexuality in a society where it is not accepted, the struggles of modern India in transition is something you and I can relate to.

Watch the first season as we gear up for the release of the second season next year.

#2- Breathe

top amazon prime shows

Breathe manages to impress on a “Hollywood” level with not only the plot but also the twists and turns that develop at every stage.

The crime thriller follows the story of a police officer who deduces a pattern in the murders of four victims waiting for organ donation and tracks it down to a parent waiting for a lung for his son.

While the plot is not unique and the trailer reveals what to expect, it is shot quite well and it entertains. All R.Madhavan fans will agree that this is one of his best performances yet, and is definitely worth watching.

Here are some of the best projector screens for a wonderful theatre experience at home

#3- Pushpavalli

Who said stalker stories must always end up giving you nightmares? Pushpavalli is the story of a protagonist who falls in love with a sweet and handsome guy and follows him (read stalks) all the way to Bangalore.

The first season ended with Pushpavalli getting humiliated, but the second season opened with her getting engaged and using that as the perfect cover to continue stalking the guy she desires!

The series made me laugh aloud with every dialogue. It did get a bit serious in parts but it got me to actually sympathise with the protagonist and the unusual characters left me asking for more.

#4- Mirzapur

top indian web series on prime

Mirzapur kept me up all night, not only cos I was binge watching it, but cos it occupied my brain wondering what was going to happen next.

What I expected to be a regular crime thriller surprised me with the character portrayals. Every character moved from being completely black or white to grey, getting me to sympathise with the villains.

The dialogues made me cringe most of the time and I shut my eyes everytime a bullet was fired (which was most of the time) but that did not get me to turn my computer screen off.

I watched it till the end and played in my head for the next few days that followed.

#5-One Mic Stand

latest amazon prime shows

One Mic Stand has all your favourite actors, politicians and musicians entertaining you with some punchy one-liners that will leave you in splits. Well, at least most of the time. A one-of-a-kind show, the participants here are trained by the best comedians to perform, with pre-written monologues.

Some of them do not execute it to the best and it gets a bit boring at times, but I think we can cut them some slack and appreciate the effort put in.

My favourite are the bits by Shashi Tharoor who delivers his parts with natural wit and sarcasm.

#6- Paatal Lok

hindi web series on amazon prime

Paatal Lok, literally meaning the hell/netherworld, or rather the underworld in our current society, deep dives into the darkness.

There is no doubt that this is one of the most well made TV series in India, with excellent direction and screenplay. Jaideep Ahlawat has done justice to the role with his serious and intense portrayal of his character.

This dark story starts off simple but goes deeper and deeper with every episode to reveal the filth, caste politics and gruesomeness of human beings.

There are no secrets in the so-called “secrets” kept about regions that you cannot access, and all of this is set amidst the contrasting beauty of the region. Paatal Lok left me disturbed, but eagerly waiting for the next season.

#7- Afsos

web series indian

The plot of Afsos is not a unique or new one, so don’t expect too much out of it. It is a light entertainer that managed to get me laughing or at least smiling, most of the time. It’s quite easy to deduce what’s coming up next, but the scenes and the dialogues did surprise me at times.

Performance of the main actors could have been much better, and the same could be said of the direction as well.

Despite all that it’s quite engaging, and I would say, it’s even worth binge watching for one of those weekends when you are lazy and want to switch off your brain.

#8- Jestination Unknown

latest amazon prime web series

You come home after a stressful day at work and you don’t want to watch something that is super serious. All you want to do is relax and laugh your brains out. Vir Das has been one of my Go-To stand-up comedians for a while now, with me watching and re-watching his shows.

Jestination Unknown is a new venture where Vir Das and his friends travel around India, bringing us a taste of what people across the country find hilarious.

While there are parts that aren’t as funny as I expected from the comedian, the whole series is quite interesting, the idea is new and it is entertaining enough to keep me on the couch all evening.

#9- Four More Shots Please

Call it a rip off of Sex and The City, criticise it as much as you want, but you have to admit that Four More Shots Please has made quite a stir in India.

I truly enjoyed watching both seasons of this series. I laughed with the four strong-minded women, cried through their pain and walked through Mumbai on high heels and always drunk on tequila.
Ok, so there are lots of questions left unanswered, some plots feel too rushed and some of the dialogues feel like they have been included just to school us, but it’s good entertainment and a pretty decent break-through for our society.

#10- Inside Edge

Feed your thirst for cricket scandals with Inside Edge. This series did not score an 8 star rating on IMDB for nothing.

The series is beyond engaging with the plots that thicken with every single episode, taking you into the world of greed and corruption, while on the other side it brings to the fore, characters that are strong and fearless.

If you think this is just another sports drama, let me assure you, it is not. This is new to the Indian screen and something you certainly have not watched before.

The first few episodes do start off a bit slow, but don’t give up and I guarantee, this show will have you hooked.

#11- The forgotten army

Indian thriller web series on Amazon prime

There are loads of highly rated shows on Amazon Prime Video these days, and The Forgotten Army joins the league. This historical drama follows the story of a Lieutenant and his army who fought for India during the second World War, with narration by our very own King Khan.

While we study about our leaders who played a role in our independence, there are rarely any books or lessons about the actual army who fought for us, and their struggles and sacrifices.

The Forgotten Army strives to bring all that to the forefront, to tell us a story about the people who existed behind the scenes, the ones who silently brought us our freedom.

#12- The Family Man

family man web series

Srikanth Tiwari is a regular middle class “family man” who shops for groceries and engages in everyday casual banter with his kids. But behind that harmless facade lies a world-class spy who secretly works for a special cell in the NIA.

Think Mr & Mrs Smith, but take Brad Pitt out of the equation and you have Manoj Bajpayee entertaining you with his excellent acting. The series is super engaging and it kept me at the edge of the seat as I watched episode after episode until I finished the entire season.

It touches every aspect of our country, right from society to politics, with regular twists and turns that are unexpected and unpredictable.

#13- Hostel Daze

binge worthy amazon prime web series

If you are an engineer, or enrolled in an engineering college (my best bet is that you are), you must watch Hostel Daze. While Five Point Someone managed to connect with Engineers everywhere, Hostel Daze will bring back memories and nostalgic moments you spent with your college friends.

The show itself is honest, and that’s what makes it so successful compared to all those Bollywood “over the top” kind of hostel films. The four main characters are goofy and fun, and have plenty of adventures that could actually happen in reality.

Their friendship and emotional moments are endearing and I kept wishing that they would continue being friends forever, even years after they graduate.
